Cottonwood Treehouse

Perched on the hillside, Cottonwood Treehouse strategically positions itself amidst the cottonwood trees, providing shade in the summer and optimal thermal heating and panoramic views in the winter. The goal of this project was twofold: to create a super energy-efficient building envelope and to artfully separate living and working spaces for the homeowners.

The building envelope of Cottonwood Treehouse is a testament to advanced building science techniques, achieving passive-level airtightness. A geothermal system, heating radiant tubing encased in gypcrete and tiled for maximum thermal mass and efficiency, ensures a cozy and sustainable heating solution, seamlessly integrating into the architectural fabric of the home.

The exterior of Cottonwood Treehouse makes a modern statement in a subtle manner with its simple form, while the interior embraces a minimal yet warm and inviting aesthetic. Attention to detail is evident in every aspect, from the minimalist trimless windows and doors to the white oak exposed extension jambs, radiating warmth throughout the space.

The level of detail and craftsmanship in Cottonwood Treehouse is exemplified by custom-designed cabinetry that is both functional and timeless. The absence of hardware creates a minimalist look, while wood elements, textures, and carefully selected furniture contribute to the inviting and warm ambiance sought by the homeowners.

The three levels of the home are thoughtfully distinct in their function. The lower level is dedicated to entertaining, the main level for everyday living, and the upper level for focused working. Large windows exploit the treehouse feel, bringing in ample daylight and establishing a constant connection with the natural surroundings.

The kitchen, a centerpiece of the main level, features a generously sized island with integrated appliances matching the cabinetry. A small coffee nook off the hallway invites special moments in the mornings, reflecting the intentional design choices that contribute to the overall functionality and charm of Cottonwood Treehouse.
